Why You Should Never Abandon Domestic Ducks in the Wild
In many places it is illegal to "dump" domestic ducks on a pond, lake or elsewhere. People often buy ducklings on a whim because they are so darn cute, not realizing the care they need. They begin to grow and get too messy for the owners, and they decide to set them free because they no longer want the responsibility.
However, domestic ducks will not survive long in the wild. Because they are domestic, they rely on humans for food, and therefore are not good enough foragers. They will slowly and painfully starve to death. They will become emaciated and be prone to illnesses.
They will not have the protection they need from predators. Most domestic ducks cannot fly, making it even easier for predators to catch and kill them.
In the winter, they will not have the shelter they need to keep from getting frozen and stuck in a lake or pond, become frostbit, and freeze to death.
It is irresponsible to dump ducks in the wild, and completely cruel.
Before you decide to purchase ducks, do your research, and be sure you are willing to care for them. their entire lives. Domestic ducks can live for 10 plus years. Be absolutely sure you are willing to be committed to being a responsible duck owner.
Ducks are wonderful and amazing creatures, be sure you're willing to give them the best life they deserve!
