Winter Care

Here are some things you need to know about caring for ducks during winter.

1. Clean, fresh water. Not only do ducks use water for hydration, but also for cleaning out their sinuses, and to digest food. Always provide plenty of fresh clean water.  The water also needs to be deep enough to dunk their heads in. Don't put water inside their coop.  They will splash it all around and get the inside of the coop wet and can also freeze creating slippery spots and a big mess.

2. A coop. Ducks will need a place to get out of the wind and get their feet up on something warm and dry, especially at night. Their coop must remain dry because too much moisture can lead to frostbite.  Their coop should be four sided, to protect them from wind, and predators at night.

3. Plenty of high-quality duck pellets, greens and grains. Ducks need these things to keep up their weight in order for them to stay warm.  Ducks have a double layer of waterproof feathers, and under that is dense layer of fat that helps your ducks maintain an average body temperature of 106 to 108° Fahrenheit.  A high-quality diet will help them maintain good feathers and the fat layer they need to stay warm.
